Medical Electives in India

Skillshare International is working alongside medical schools in the UK and our partners in India to offer medical students the opportunity to participate in an exciting electives programme.

During the six-week placement, students will be placed with one of Skillshare International’s partner organisations in India. Students are based in a local community and on combined placements also have the opportunity to gain experience in a hospital setting.

The elective gives students a deeper understanding of the global determinants of health care needs and delivery systems, with a first-hand learning experience in India. It develops students’ understanding of global and local issues relating to health, social inequality and international development. The programme contributes to the development of global health professions with skills, knowledge and attitudes that are relevant for working with low resource communities and in industrialised areas.

Skillshare staff in the India Country Office will provide overall supervision and will support undergraduate medical students wishing to take up their elective placement with Skillshare partners in India. The India staff will also liaise with the host partner and co-ordinate the in-country movements after arrival to ensure safety and security. Mother and child in Tamil Nadu

Each student is expected to raise £900 and donate that to the host partner as a contribution to the costs, as well as to meet community project needs. In turn, Skillshare and the host partner together offer logistical support – pick up and drop from the nearest rail station, travel to project villages, safe and modest accommodation, and food at the partner location, as well as interning time with the medical doctors at the project. The contribution also pays for staff time.

The electives are usually held between March-May, but can be held at a time to fit in with students’ university schedule.
