Mozambique is an independent Republic in southern Africa, and a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Commonwealth of Nations. Before independence in 1975 Mozambique, then known as Mozambique province, was a Portuguese colony.
It is an area of 799,300 square kilometres, and is surrounded by Tanzania in the north, South Africa and Swaziland in the South, Malawi, and Zambia and Zimbabwe in the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. The latest population census puts the population at about 10,000 million inhabitants.

Maputo is the capital city and is located near the eastern border with Mozambique Channel (Indian Ocean). It lies between latitude 10 27' North: 26 52' South and Longitude 20 12' East and 40 51' East.
Mozambique has an invigorating tropical climate. Within the four seasons of the year, Mozambique has two, namely Summer running from June to February and Winter from March to July. Summer is the rainiest season while Winter often brings cold weather. The temperatures vary from 12 degrees c or less in the winter to a maximum of 35 degrees c or higher in Summer.
The Country boasts an abundance of natural resources. There are many deposits of diamond, silver, iron, copper, granite, clay, sandstone rock, a few deposits of gold, etc. There is also water in abundance.
Mozambique faces major economic and social challenges following the devastation of civil war. 70% of the country's population live in absolute poverty in the rural areas and access to education and health is difficult. The rural literacy rate is an alarming 32%, dropping to 16% for women. As many as 45% of children are malnourished.
Region
Angoche is a district of Nampula, situated in the north of Mozambique. The climate is humid tropical with a rainy season from December until April. The population estimates for Angoche District vary between 242,872 (district administration) and 139,667 (UNHOAC in 1994 for the purpose of humanitarian aid) and 178,302 (1980 census). The staple crops in the family sector in the district are cassava, maize, groundnuts, beans and rice. Vegetable crops are not extensive cultivated in the district. The main commercial crops are cashew nuts, groundnuts, rice and maize. Fruit trees including mango, cashew, coconut, banana, pawpaw, orange, tangerine and grapefruit are grown for domestic and commercial uses.
The district is served by public road transport as well as sea transport. There are telephone and radio communication links. Angoche is the old Portuguese centre with wide roads leading from the outskirts of town to the sea and buildings from the imperial era. It consists of two housing areas (baerros) to the north and south of the centre holding a population of 88,716 inhabitants. The history of Angoche was connected with slavery. In nowadays serves as a principal centre for artisan fishing tuna, shark and surface prawns) and industrial enterprises. There are shops, supermarkets, restaurants and night clubs. Angoche city has a rural hospital and secondary school. The province is prone to flooding.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To teach English to grades 8a, 9a and 10a.
- To prepare lessons and design related and appropriate materials as resources allow.
- To procure materials and books (from INGOs and others).
- To be class Head and subject Head.
- To assist other teachers by transfer of teaching skills including English language skills.
- Report to the Director and Deputy Head.
Person Specification
Essential
- First degree plus a teaching qualification (PGCE or RSA diploma TEFL or equivalent).
- A minimum of two years teaching experience preferably including overseas and/or ESL.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to be flexible to accommodate issues/situations that arise which are not specifically indicated in the job description.
- Must be willing to learn Portuguese.
Desirable
- Ability to work with people from different cultures, and to adapt work practice accordingly.
- Experience of lessons preparation and design of teaching materials.

Terms and Conditions:
24 hours per week, Monday to Friday
7.00am - 12.10pm 5.45pm - 10.45pm largely dependent upon on timetables for the different classes.
Holiday entitlement to be taken during mid Dec - mid Jan, mid year break and June/July mid semestre breaks.
Environment:
The working environment is of a very busy school with increasing numbers of students attending. There is a telphone facility.
Other Information
Accommodation will be provided by Skillshare Africa and is a 2 bed room flat on the first floor in the centre of town, 15-20 minutes easy walk from the school. Transport is not necessary.
A part of the monthly allowance will be paid directly by the City Council and the balance met by Skillshare to make it equal to the standard DW allowance.
