"I know how people can be trapped by poverty. The chance to learn a practical skill can make all the difference and that is why I decided to support the work of Skillshare Africa by becoming a Friend"

Getting Involved with FOS

FOS Local Groups

Meeting together with other Friends of Skillshare Africa is one of the best ways to get involved in supporting sustainable development in southern Africa. Working together in small local groups Friends are able to hold fundraising events, promote awareness of development and increase the profile of Skillshare Africa.

FOS Speakers Network

Would your organisation, workplace or social club enjoy hearing about the realities of life and work in Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa or Swaziland? FOS can provide you with inspiring speakers for your event.

Every year Development Workers return to the UK after sharing their skills in southern Africa with Skillshare Africa. Each returned development worker has a fascinating story to tell. In addition FOS members can suggest ways for you to actively support development in southern Africa.

There is no charge for providing speakers, but we do ask for the host to cover reasonable travel costs and make a voluntary contribution.

Disability: Development Education Day
Friends Meeting House, Queens Road, Leicester
10am to 4.30pm

Childcare facilities are available, please contact us at the earliest opportunity.

Are you aware of the issues facing disabled people in the UK and developing countries? Would you like to know more? Would you like to share what you already know? If so, Skillshare Africa and Action Health would like to hear from you.

We will be holding a development education day on April 21 for supporters, returned development workers and trainers, with a focus on disability.

The aims of the day are:

Janet Bliss, Training Officer, said: "It will be the first opportunity returned trainers, Development workers and supporters will have had to get together and discuss development issues since the merger.

"We are looking forward to raising our awareness of the day-to-day issues that disabled people face here in the UK and the developing world."

There will be an opportunity to update understanding on the positive issues that have taken place in the UK (such as the Disability Discrimination Act) and learn about placements in Africa and India that challenge discrimination and provide access to services for disabled people.

For more information please contact Janet Bliss on 0116 254 1862 or email janet.bliss@skillshare.org

Keep your eyes peeled on the website for news of future events.
