
Working in closer collaboration with IDPPE fisheries technology department in Maputo and under the guidance of the delegation. The officer will assist the Delegation's section of fisheries technology on various technical, methodological and organisational issues. He/She will directly work with colleagues in the department in the implementation of fishing activities. The Placement: IDPPE is a Government institution and its primary aim is the sustainable development of the artisan fisheries sub-sector in Mozambique through job creation innovation and protein rich good production. The organisation is planning to expand field activities to cover the whole of the coastal areas as well as Inland fisheries. Artisan fisheries' communities nation wide are the organisation's beneficiaries. Beneficiaries are involved in the decision-making process through the system of fisheries co-management promoted by IDPPE. The IDPPE is currently Government funded and will continue to be so in the future. However, the organisation is trying to diversify the resources through donor funding. Co-operation with other NGO's (ex: care) is focused on implementation of field activities. There are in total 168 staff with 5% female and 5 expatriate staff IDPPE
is involved in development projects implementation. This includes:social
research; In
order to build up institutional capacity in the following professional
areas: fishing technology, social development and planning and finance,
IDPPE is looking to have some input from SKI through skills provision.
There will be4 Fisheries Officers; 4 Social Development Officers
and 4 Planning and Finance Officers placed in the following provinces:
Country Mozambique is an independent Republic in southern Africa, and a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Commonwealth of Nations. Before independence in 1975 Mozambique, then known as Mozambique province, was a Portuguese colony. It is an area of 799,300 square kilometres, and is surrounded by Tanzania in the north, South Africa and Swaziland in the South, Malawi, and Zambia and Zimbabwe in the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. The latest population census puts the population at about 10,000 million inhabitants. Maputo is the capital city and is located near the eastern border with Mozambique Channel (Indian Ocean). It lies between latitude 10 27' North: 26 52' South and Longitude 20 12' East and 40 51' East. Mozambique has an invigorating tropical climate. Within the four seasons of the year, Mozambique has two, namely Summer running from June to February and Winter from March to July. Summer is the rainiest season while Winter often brings cold weather. The temperatures vary from 12 degrees c or less in the winter to a maximum of 35 degrees c or higher in Summer. The Country boasts an abundance of natural resources. There are many deposits of diamond, silver, iron, copper, granite, clay, sandstone rock, a few deposits of gold, etc. There is also water in abundance. Mozambique
faces major economic and social challenges following the devastation
of civil war. 70% of the country's population live in absolute poverty
in the rural areas and access to education and health is difficult.
The rural literacy rate is an alarming 32%, dropping to 16% for women.
As many as 45% of children are malnourished. Working with donors,
the Government has prioritised public investment in education, health,
water and sanitation.
Nampula is the most densely populated province in the country with about 2.975.747 inhabitants, mainly Makua speakers. The Nampula province has a great agricultural and fishing potential. Principal productions and exports are: cashew-nuts, cotton, sisal, coconuts, tobacco, salt and fish. Cashew-nuts is however the main production, with good production units. Semi precious stones are also gaining relevance. Nampula is the biggest city in the north of Mozambique, 190 kms away from the coast, served by railways and a regional airport. There are investments done on the major roads. Nampula is the second largest city in country. This is in terms of economic potential growth, a lot of new modern shop have opened in town (electronic equipment, audio-visuals, cloths, food, bookshops, etc). The main hospital in the northern Mozambique is situated in Nampula. There is also a private clinic with modern equipment for diagnosis. There are 5 different banks working with on-line system, credit card system (cash machines). The airport has connecting flights to the north of Mozambique. In addition, there is a small airline company that provides almost daily flights to Nacala, ilha de Moçambique, Cuamba(Niassa province), Quelimane(Zambezia Province), and Malawi offering a cheap fares (less than one hundred USD). The railway station is not safe and reliable. However, there are modern buses that connect Nampula to the principal towns and villages of the province on daily basis. There is a shortage of sport fields or Gyms but at least one swimming pool is functioning (clube ferroviario). Angoche is a district of
Nampula, situated in the north of Mozambique. The climate is humid
tropical with a rainy season from December until April.

All IDPPE Delegations are located in provincial towns offering all necessary basic facilities. The development worker will have the essential working facilities transport from and to workplace and family accommodation. The house will be situated in the city where the development work will be placed. This will be a family accommodation: 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room bathroom.
