Why volunteer with us?

Skillshare International is at the cutting edge of international volunteering.

We base our activities around a progressive model of development work, where the focus is firmly on the needs of our partner organisations in Africa and Asia. All of our placements are in response to requests from our partner organisations.

Development worker Sophie Meredith works on peace building in Cambodia.
  • Our volunteers are skilled professionals and to reflect this we refer to you as development workers.
  • We provide flights, a living allowance and accommodation during your placement.
  • Your fellow development workers will be professionals, mid-career or even approaching retirement.
  • Your role will be clearly defined, with measurable outcomes.
  • You can feel confident that your contribution will make a lasting impact.
  • There is no cost for the opportunity to become a development worker with Skillshare International. However, we do ask that you raise a minimum of £500 or the equivalent towards our work.
  • Our placements focus on building capacity rather than filling gaps through technical assistance.
  • We will encourage you to become a catalyst for social change, raising awareness and challenging perceptions.
  • When your return from your placement, we will support you to raise awareness of development issues and continue to strive for social change.
Undoubtedly, you can expect to benefit by gaining:
  • Broader professional skills
  • Experience of training and mentoring others
  • Improved self-awareness and intercultural competency
  • Deeper awareness of development issues
  • Personal growth
  • Good memories

But Skillshare is about much more than that. We believe that our development workers are a positive force for good in society, the kinds of people who can influence decision-makers and be a part of a movement to eradicate poverty, injustice and inequality. We hope that you will want to join us based on this ethos.
