Next steps

Look at our current vacancies and complete an application form for a specific placement(s) or for general recruitment. We will send you an email to say that we have received your application.  This will also confirm whether you have met our minimum criteria.

It's a good idea to start your application well in advance as the pre-placement process of police checks, medical checks and visa applications can take several months. We are very happy to accept general applications for several months in advance.

Applications for specific placements

  • If you are shortlisted, we will inform you by email.
  • If you are not shortlisted for this placement, we will register your application for six months.
  • We will interview shortlisted applicants on the phone, online or in person.

General recruitment

  • Your application will be registered for six months.
  • If a suitable role becomes available, we will notify you by email.
  • We will interview shortlisted applicants on the phone, online or in person.

If you are successful, we will contact our partner organisation in Africa or Asia to recommend you for the placement.  Our partner organisation makes the final decision to appoint you.

We offer pre-departure training to all successful applicants. The training could mean attending a workshop or using online resources:

  • Prepares you for living and working in a developing country.
  • Gives you the opportunity to learn more about Skillshare International and how your role fits into the activities of the organisation as a whole.
  • Improves your ability to live and work in a new environment.

If your partner is accompanying you, s/he will also be expected to participate in the training.

We will help you to apply for your visa and get the right vaccinations.  We ask all development workers to have a medical examination before their placements.

In-country orientation when you arrive

Before starting your placement, we will arrange a local orientation so that you can meet our staff in the country and your new colleagues at the partner organisation.  As part of this orientation we will also give you information about local life and discuss your new role.  You will have some time to move into your house and settle in.  Where necessary, you will have language training.
