Placement Information Angoche is one of the biggest cities in Nampula province. It is located by the seaside about 180km from Nampula city. There are two sand roads connecting both towns as follows:
Both roads are under maintenancce, although in summer, rains sweep off the gravel creating potholes and cuts on the road. In those times, the journey from Nampula can take up to 4 or 5 hours. Bridges along the roads are metallic and in good condition. The city of Angoche is divided into two distinct parts, one with conventional buildings where the shops, administrative institutions, police, telecommunications, schools and private houses are located. The other section, known as The Bairro de Inguri where the major population of the town lives, has houses built mostly of mud bricks dried in the sun and covered with palm tree leaves (Swahili architecture design). Despite the presence of running tap water, Angoche residents are advised to boil water and filter it before consuming it due to avoid contracting cholera. Normally Angoche is a warm/hot place. Malaria is endemic in area. Residents use mosquito nets and have nets on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out. Angoche Rural hospital is the referral centre for 4 southern districts of Nampula province. The hospital is short staffed and presently has one GP. Equipment present is not well maintained due to lack of resources. Serious medical cases are referred to Nampula. Currently Angoche has mobile phone connection, and modern land telephones at TDM where people can call all over the world. There are several shops where people can buy food and drinks, cleaning produts,a nd some elctronic devices, although the prices are expensive compared to purchasing in Nampula. There are also some bakeries, and two pharmacies. For fresh food, seafood is available and lowly priced compared to other parts of Mozambique. Fishermen sell at markets and home to home. Vegetables are seasonal and shortages are therefore experienced. Fresh meat is available - goat, beef and poultry. Angoche is mostly a Muslim town. Angoche does not have establsihed boarding houses or hotels. Travellers rent private houses. Some houses are of very good standrds with hot water, TV and security. Many people stay at the INAS (NAtional Institute for Social Action) house, or Dona Virginia (Bairro do Muchelele) and in Bairro Puli, in private houses to rent.
Other Information Interested GPS should expect a relatively lengthy delay in taking up the placement. It will take 5-9 months from the period of being offered the position by Skillshare International to th epoint of taking up the placement. This is due mainly to the long periods it takes the Mozambique government to issue appointment letter to medical doctors who plan to live and work in the country.
