Global Health Electives in India
Working with local organisations in India, Skillshare International is offering medical students the opportunity to participate in a new and exciting medical electives programme.
An elective in India gives students direct experience of the global determinants of health care needs and delivery systems, with an inside learning experience in India.
During the six-week elective students will be placed with one of Skillshare International's partner organisations in India. The electives are usually held between March-May but can be held at a time to fit in with students' university schedule. Students would be based with a local community and, on a combined placement, would also have the opportunity to gain experience in a hospital setting. Find out more about the electives here.
The aim of an elective is to develop students' understanding of global and local issues relating to health, social inequality and international development. The programme will contribute to the development of global health professionals with skills, knowledge and attitdes that are relevant for working with low resource communities and in industrialised areas.
Training and supervision
Dr Abraham Joseph (retired Head and professor of Community Health from the Christian Medical College, Vellore) will provide overall supervision. Students will be expected to attend a pre-departure workshop in the UK or Ireland. Skillshare International staff in India will provide a cultural induction and organise transfers to the placement and accommodation.
Who can apply?
Places on the Skillshare International electives in India are being offered only to medical students. Due to the limited number of places available, we will prioritise applications from countries where we work: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and the UK.
