East Africa Regional Programme
In East Africa we work with a range of different organisations including government departments, educational institutions, local groups and regional and continental networks.
Find out more about our work in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Our regional programme partners include the Eastern Africa National Networks of AIDS Service Organisations (EANNASO); the Greater Horn of Africa Rainwater Partnership (GHARP); and the Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA). We also work with two cross-border organisations, MAAP and LOCIP, on a Maasai livelihoods project in Kenya and Tanzania. |
GHARP promotes rainwater harvesting and management systems as well as complementary technologies for improving water supply and sanitation; health and nutrition; food security; enterprise development; environmental management; and sustainable livelihoods.
GHARP's vision is that all people in the Greater Horn of Africa should have sustainable quality livelihoods and its mission is “to facilitate the promotion of appropriate approaches and technologies in rainwater harvesting and management”. GHARP supports the institutional strengthening of NRWA and its stakeholders; awareness raising; capacity building; advocacy; networking; information dissemination; research and technology development.
Current GHARP members include Ethiopia Rainwater Harvesting Association, Kenya Rainwater Association, Rainwater Association of Somalia, Rainwater Harvesting Association of Tanzania and Uganda Rainwater Association.
We have been working in partnership with GHARP since 2004. In June 2007, a Skillshare International development worker began to enhance service delivery, collaboration, networking and information dissemination for GHARP and its members. We also support GHARP in resource mobilisation, organisational effectiveness and in mainstreaming peace and gender in its programme.

Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA)
The Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA) was established by African peace practitioners in 1995 to serve as a network for collaboration and support for people and organisations faced with volatile and potentially violent conflict in Africa. COPA's membership spreads over 30 countries worldwide, with more than 200 individual and organisational members. Its activities are coordinated from the secretariat in Nairobi, with regional offices in Burundi, South Africa and Uganda.
COPA is involved in raising the profiles of African peace practitioners and highlighting conflict situations in the continent through research and dissemination of information and experiences. The information is used to lobby and advocate for peace at various levels.
COPA engages in linking and learning by connecting people with skills and experience in different aspects of peace building and conflict transformation. It supports capacity building of peace practitioners through training, exchange visits and learning forums. One of COPA's members, Responding To Conflict, in collaboration with an African University, is beginning a Masters Programme for peace practitioners in Africa in 2008.
Skillshare International has worked in partnership with COPA since 2003 in financial resource and leadership development. We have placed three development workers at COPA in resource mobilisation; strategy and programme development; and networking and research.
