About WDTC

The Ministry of Local Development, with support from Ford Foundation, established Women Development Training Centre (WDTC) in 1956. Its primary aim was to enhance the participation of women from rural areas in economic productivity. WDTC has been involved in a variety of action research and training activities, from income generation to women leadership development.

Since 1993, WDTC has been operating under Local Development Training Academy Act 1993 (LDTAA 93). Across Nepal, there are seven training centres under LDTA . WDTC is the only women’s training centre under this Act and has been mandated to carry out training, research, and consultancy on the issues of children and women, addressing gender for local development. WDTC has acquired vast experience of working with rural and urban communities, and continues its work in the area of women’s empowerment, gender and development.

WDTC is managed by a group of highly qualified and dedicated multidisciplinary staff (23 staff, 9 of whom are women and 14 are men). All the employees are Nepali citizens. The staff salaries are funded by the Ministry of Local Development. The Local Development Training Academy Council constitutes of 27 members. The President of the Academy is the Minister of Local Development, and Member-Secretary of the Council is the Executive Director to the Academy. The Training Centre is headed by a Principal, and supported by three Assistant Directors. Other Training & Research Officers assist in managing the centre.

In Nepal t here is a general lack of gender sensitivity at local government level, the main client of WDTC. WDTC is mandated to sensitise the local government bodies through various workshops and training programmes. WDTC is struggling to reposition itself and to deliver its programmes to the specific clientele in the most effective manner. It needs to update its current programmes and to adapt these to suit learner needs. Some of the staff members also require skills development in order to act as effective trainers in gender and development.
